New Titles From Crossway

Comforts From the Cross

In Comforts From the Cross, Elyse Fitzpatrick shows how the truths of justification, sanctification, adoption, reconciliation, and redemption free women from condemnation and works-based righteousness. She reminds the reader of God’s amazing love for her, and that reminder will engender love for him that will help her respond in grace to the demands of her day.

This Momentary Marriage This Momentary Marriage

Marriage is a momentary gift that points to a great and eternal reality. Reflecting on forty years of matrimony, John Piper explains that marriage is the doing of God and the display of God. It is not mainly about being in love, but about pointing to the truth with our lives. And staying married is not about staying in love, but keeping a covenant and putting the glory of Christ’s covenant love on display.

A Shelter in the Time of Storm  Shelter

In A Shelter in the Time of Storm, Paul David Tripp provides fifty-two meditations on Psalm 27 to instruct and encourage believers to run towards God in times of trouble, not from him. This is a psalm of personal torment and restful worship, of difficulty and beauty, the wickedness of man and of the mercy of God. Psalm 27 speaks into the lives of every believer as it captures the reality of walking with the Lord in a world that has been shattered by sin.

Tripp designed these meditations to be a challenging and hopeful devotion that would grow readers in their hunger to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord, to call for mercy and help, and to worship the Lord as they grow in a deeper and richer pursuit of him.

The Case for Life

by crossway on March 30th, 2009

Scott Klusendorf

Equipping Christians to Engage the Culture.  Crossway, 2009.

As President Obama signed the executive order repealing the policy that limited federal tax dollars for stem cell research on March 9, 2009, the release of Scott Klusendorf’s The Case for Life couldn’t be more timely.

Klusendorf travels throughout the United States and Canada training pro-life advocates to persuasively communicate their views in the public square. This book will provide intellectual grounding for pro-life convictions and help readers articulate issues of abortion, cloning, and embryo research from a biblical perspective in the face of an increasingly secularized culture. The Case for Life will equip readers to answer critics who claim that pro-life advocates provide no reasonable defense for their views, when in fact the pro-life position contains more explanatory power than the abortion-choice and pro-embryonic positions.

Klusendorf simplifies the debate: the sanctity of life is not a morally complex issue. It’s not about choice, privacy, or scientific progress. To the contrary, the debate turns on one key question: What is the unborn?

While this book is primarily for pro-life Christians, it will benefit any pro-life supporter looking to communicate these principles. We can impact culture provided we properly understand and articulate the pro-life message.

Please accept this special invitation to our new website: www.epbooks.org or www.epbooks.us.  As an introduction we would like to offer you a discount code which will allow you to claim 10% off your order.  If you enter the code “invitation” at the checkout, the discount will be deducted.

New titles due out this month include:

  • The New Creationism by Paul Garner
“This book is greatly needed in helping to popularize creation model-building as it introduces the reader to the best contemporary creationist models in astronomy, geology, biology, and so on — and at a level the layperson can understand.”
    -
Ken Ham, President, Answers in Genesis — U.S. / Creation Museum
  • Practice Makes Perfect (a new edition to the Welwyn Commentary Series) by Anthony Bird
  • Stars in God’s Sky by Faith Cook
“If Faith Cook wrote a comic book, I would buy it! Reading her mini-biographies, as in Stars in God’s Sky (and a raft of others), is always a soul-nourishing, faithfortifying exercise. I love her tendency to bypass the all-stars and focus on the ‘dirt disciples’ who simply slug it out in faithfulness to Jesus. We are again in her debt.  ‘My father used to tell me, “Anything J. C. Ryle writes is good!” And I’ve the same opinion of Faith Cook. I hope preachers read her stuff — it’ll both nourish their souls and improve their sermon illustrations!”
    - Dr Ralph Davis, Woodland Presbyterian Church Hattiesburg, MS

More information about these books can be found on the website.

John Calvin: A Heart for Devotion, Doctrine, & Doxology

by admin on February 19th, 2009

joh08_book_3d.jpgJohn Calvin: A Heart for Devotion, Doctrine, and Doxology is a winsome portrait that dashes stereotypes about Calvin and the theological system that bears his name. In answer to why it is important for laypeople to study John Calvin’s writings, Burk Parsons explains:

“First of all, the people of God should be wholeheartedly engaged, first and foremost, in the daily study of God’s Word. Second, as God’s people study God’s Word in depth they will quickly understand the necessity of interpreting Scripture with Scripture, and that is precisely what Calvin helps us to do — to the end that we might know and proclaim the whole counsel of God. Third, John Calvin was not an ivory-tower theologian who was out of touch with the real-life struggles of God’s people. Not only did he struggle himself, but he knew well the plight of his people in his congregation. He could empathize with their afflictions and so shepherded them in preaching, praying, writing, and counseling. Calvin was, first and foremost, a pastor of God’s people.”

Endorsements:

“If you have neglected Calvin’s writings for fear they are too difficult or too dreary, this book will change your mind. It is a compendium of his thought presented, as we might expect from these writers, clearly, engagingly, and with a devotional warmth that encourages us to know the God whom we worship.”
–Alistair Begg, Senior pastor Parkside Church in Chagrin Falls, Ohio

“Deep calls to deep, and Burk Parsons’ rich and insightful work on John Calvin takes us both deep and wide into the heart of this extraordinary saint. Most of all, I’m grateful to God that a whole new generation of believers can now be introduced to one of the greatest theologians of all time. I highly recommend this book to all who are seeking a closer–and deeper–walk with our Savior!”
–Joni Eareckson Tada, Founder, Joni and Friends International Disability Center in Agoura Hills, California

“To my knowledge, there never has been a collection of authors of any edited volume under whose ministry I would rather sit than these. What stands out is that they are humble, holy men of God. Most of them are too old–too seasoned–to care about scoring points. Their lives witness to the preciousness of Christ and the importance of purity. Expect no bombast. Expect humble, measured admiration and wise application. This is a good way to meet John Calvin: in the holy hearts of humble servants of Christ. The only better way would be to read the man himself.”
–John Piper, Pastor for preaching and vision, Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota

Get your FREE copy of John Calvin: A Heart for Devotion, Doctrine & Doxology, edited today by visiting calvinforpastors.ligonier.org. An $19 retail value, just $5 will be charged for shipping and handling. Offer good while supplies last or until 6/12/09.

Vintage Church

Timeless Truths and Timely Methods  Crossway, 2009

Mark Driscoll & Gerry Breshears                                                9781433501302.jpg

The latest book in the Re:Lit series picks up where Vintage Jesus leaves off, focusing on the person and work of Jesus and then further exploring the confessional, experiential, and missional aspects of his church. In Vintage Church, Driscoll and Breshears seek to exalt Christ by explaining his relationship to the church, as he is the preeminent authority over her and the model for her as prophet, priest, and king.

The authors address the imbalance that occurs when any of these aspects of the church is neglected or over- emphasized at the expense of others, leading to cruel fundamentalism, compromised liberalism, or cowardly evangelism. Driscoll and Breshears provide the church with a great challenge to cling to and apply truth within the context of a twenty-first-century culture. Vintage Church presents twelve practical questions about church doctrine and answers them in clear, biblical language.

This is a resource that will certainly equip pastors and church leaders to define the biblical church and apply relevant methods, as well as benefiting lay people, new believers, and those who have questions about ecclesiology.
